Acupuncture–Bringing Balance and Harmony to Life

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one branch of the 5,000 year old Oriental medical tradition. Acupuncture works through the manipulation of Qi (pronounced 'chee'), an energy force that runs throughout nature and also through meridians (pathways) in the human body. These meridians are connected to different organ systems. Qi has 2 opposite qualities, yin (female attributes) and yang (male attributes). When the normal flow of Qi in the body is blocked, yin and yang qualities are thrown out of balance, thereby affecting the health of the body or mind.

Negative mental/emotional states, infection, hereditary factors, poor nutrition, trauma, even changes in the weather may influence the flow of Qi. Since the harmonious flow of Qi and the balance of yin and yang affect all of life, imbalance may bring about symptoms on the physical, mental, emotional or spiritual levels. The aim of acupuncture is to re-establish balance and harmony to these four areas of life.

The skill of the acupuncturist is to formulate a diagnosis from the client's symptoms and their own observations during examination. Every imbalance is different and requires a unique approach.

What Can I Expect?

During the initial visit the acupuncturist takes a detailed history of medical concerns. The client then reclines comfortably on a massage table while the licensed acupuncturist examines the tongue and gently palpates the radial pulses at each wrist to determine which body points need stimulation. These body points (acupuncture points) exist along the meridian lines through which the Qi flows most closely to the surface of the skin.

Very fine, solid but flexible needles about the size of a human hair are then gently inserted into these points to regulate the free flow of Qi. Depending on the diagnosis, different types of needles and different insertion angles can be used. The needles may be stimulated to produce a certain effect. Acupressure (a form of massage therapy) may be used instead of needles to stimulate the same points.

Acupuncture bears no resemblance to the feeling of an injection. In most cases, insertion by a skilled practitioner is performed without discomfort. Many patients find the treatments relaxing and may fall asleep during the session.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture is considered to be one of the safest medical procedures in the world when performed by a qualified professional. Practitioners are licensed and certified after successful completion of a 3-4 year program at a nationally approved school, passing national certification examinations and participating in continuing education programs.

Acupuncture needles are sterile, used only once and disposed of according to accepted biohazard specifications. As always, individual concerns may be discussed with the licensed practitioner before treatment.
