Its holistic objective is the restoration of function, release of tension and the re-establishment of the contours where this is desirable.

It is a therapeutic, healing, relaxing application of physical touch.

During a basic Western whole body massage the patient lies unclothed under a towel on a massage table while the massage therapist kneads the knots out of the back, legs, arms and shoulders using one of several different techniques. A massage may involve oil or lotion for easier work on the muscles.

Results may include improved circulation, lymphatic drainage, stimulated breathing, increased flow of nutrients/oxygen to tissues, lowered heart/pulse rate, detoxification, weight loss, healthier skin, removal of tissue deposits, stimulated activity of skin/glands, improved muscle tone, stress/tension relief, pain relief, relaxation of mind and body, and/or an improved sense of well being.
