Highs and Lows of Energy Drinks

Many energy drinks claim to contain natural ingredients and herbal extracts that enhance physical and mental performance.

But, the main ingredients are caffeine and sugar.

For example, a 12 oz. Diet Coke contains about 35 milligrams of caffeine, while an 8 oz. Red Bull contains about 80 milligrams of caffeine. And those little shot-sized bottles at gas stations that promise hours of energy contain about 200 milligrams of caffeine! 

Once absorbed in the body, caffeine enters all parts of the body, including the brain. Depending on the individual, caffeine stays in the body for two to 12 hours. 

The combination of glucose and caffeine also reduces insulin sensitivity.

If you drink sugary, caffeinated drinks on a regular basis, you increase your risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
