How did you come to learn the benefits of Jin Shin Jyutsu?

Jin Shin Jyutsu means "art of the creator through compassionate man." It is a healing art from Japan that is said to be older than Moses, Buddha, and the Kojiki. It died out at one point and was rediscovered in the early 1900s by Jiro Murai and brought to the US by Mary Burmeister. In January of 2008, I had been very ill with bronchitis. My cough had gone so deep that I thought I had Pneumonia. My chiropractor had been encouraging me to see someone who’s work he thought I’d like and like to learn to do as well. I finally made the call I’d been putting off for a long time.

I laid down on Zoe Koufoupolis’ massage table in Beverly Hills, CA fully clothed. She began listening to my pulses at my wrist, much like an acupuncturist does. Then she began laying her hands on my body in different configurations. She began with cradling my sacrum. Right then I finally began to relax after weeks of being sick. Zoe sent me home with homework of holding my fingers, beginning with a thumb and then index finger, middle, ring, little finger, then switching to the other hand. I immediately knew this is what I wanted to do for myself and to help others. This began a love affair with an energy practice that has changed my life.

How exactly does it work to benefit people?

Mary Burmeister says: “Through Jin Shin Jyutsu our awareness is awakened to the simple fact that we are endowed with the ability to harmonize and balance ourselves (in rhythm with the universe) physically, mentally and spiritually.“ Jin Shin Jyutsu is an art as opposed to a technique because a technique is a mechanical application, whereas an art is a skillful creation. This beautiful, simple Art is our inheritance.”

I would add to that: when we touch ourselves, someone else or animals, we are acting as a jumper cable giving energy where needed. When we touch the body in places called Safety Energy Locks, we feel an energy pulse. We wait for the pulses we feel in each hand to balance and come into harmony. Jin Shin Jyutsu has helped people I know conquer cancer, go through chemotherapy with more energy and less side effects, relieve SI pain, relieve headaches and migraines, spinal misalignments, heal breaks, heal quicker from operations, constipation and diarrhea, feel comfortable in situations, feel more comfortable in themselves, get a handle on the attitudes of worry, fear, anger, grief, and pretense, and so many other benefits.

Would you say it enhances inner peace? In what ways?

It’s simple, when our energy is flowing smoothly, there is peace, energy, health, harmony, balance. I believe this is our birthright and peace is the core of our existence. Inner peace is a feeling, a knowing, and it is there in everyone - it just gets covered up with things that happen. We can get back to it as easily as holding our fingers, smiling, dropping our shoulders, and breathing.
